JSW Jharkhand Steel
JSW Steel has signed a MoU with the Government of Jharkhand for setting up of a 10 MTPa integrated steel plant along with 900 MW
captive power plant and 6 MTPa cement plant in the state. The total proposed area for the plant is 6500 acres. The proposed site
selected falls under the Sonahatu Block of Ranchi District. It is approximately 75 kms south-east of Ranchi.
Jharkhand Government has also sanctioned 80 MGD of water from Subarnrekha river which is required for the plant and township.
JSW has also submitted a proposal to the Jharkhand State Electricity Board to construct a 5 MVA power plant for the Sonahatu project,
which is under active consideration.
Demographic profile
The proposed project site at Sonahatu block includes 15 revenue villages and its tolas along the Silli-Rangamati road.
The area bordering the state of West Bengal is tribal dominated and borders the state of West Bengal. The proposed site is about 20 kms
from Silli and well connected to the industrial belt of Jamshedpur. The river Kanchi and Subarnrekha flows through the region.
Being an arid and mono-cropping region, villagers are mainly depended on rain water to cultivate rice. Vegetation level is low due acute water
scarcity. Of few hand pumps are present in the area, many do not function. Electricity is yet to reach the region.
The men folks mainly farmers, work as agricultural labourers. Due to high unemployment and underemployment during the harvest season
sees mass migration to neighbouring cities like Jamshedpur and Ranchi. Some even move out to distant states like Gujarat, Karnataka, Maharashtra
to seek work as construction labours on daily wages. Women generally work in the field during the harvest season as well as take care of home and hearth.
The poor villagers live under impoverished economic and social condition.
