Environment Initiatives

CSR policies on Environmental Issues followed by JSW group:
Through JSW Foundation, the following CSR activities on environmental issues are being followed by JSW

  • Bio-fuel plantation : The Jatropha plantations which serve as Bio fuels, have been planted in about 120 acres in the Township of JSW Steel. The same will in later stages be developed in agricultural lands of farmers of nearby villages.
  • Rainwater Harvesting : This is being implemented in nearby villages especially for public buildings such as in schools.
  • Garbage Management : This is being done in surrounding three villages and consists of Collection , treatment, segregation and process of the wastes. An awareness management among the communities is also conducted.
  • Drainage Development : The village Vaddu is selected for the drainage development program.
The company started the production in the year 1997 and since then it has been catering to the environmental problems

At JSW Steel, we are continuously striving to reduce the impact of our operations on the climate. We realize that as a mineral processing industry, we are duty bound to make a substantial contribution to environment management. We set up a power generating facility using waste gases generated in steel making. This project has been registered by United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change under the Clean Development Mechanism and the estimated emission reduction (tons of CO2) over a 10 year period would be 7,673,254.
JSW proposes to channel some of the money earned from Carbon Credits through the CSR framework towards activities, which encourage local capacity building in climate change management

In the year 2006, JSW Steel had won the "Green Tech Award" for excellence in Environment Management

The very success story of JSW Steel lies in its " Green Steel Concept". Corex , the most eco-friendly procss was the beginning of the journey . Corex route has many advantages over the conventional BF route.
It eliminates the most polluting substances.

  • Iron ore lumps can be used directly instead of Sinter
  • The rich off gases (Cv of 1850 Kcal/Nm3) can be used for power generation replacing power generation by Conventional coal route and subsequent coal/ash handling facilities.
JSW did not stop at only Corex. The journey towards green steel continued through the Non Recovery Coke Ovens, where in we have put up 1.2Mtpa NR Coke Ovens with a power generation of capacity 130MW, from the waste heat of NR Ovens.
JSW has also commissioned 100MW Gas based power plant which uses off gases from Corex and Blast furnace, thus eliminating the pollutants like oxides of Sulphur and Nitrogen.
About 7% of the total investment is being spent annually for different eco -friendly measures.

Environmental awareness is achieved among employees by conducting monthly training programs on various environmental issues. In order to create awareness among the school children, Jindal nature Club has been formed.

Under the plantation drive around 10 lakh saplings have been planted in and around the steel plant and in the township.

We will qualify our stand on global warming through the remarks by our VC & MD Shri Sajjan Jindal and the Chairperson of the Jindal South West Foundation, Mrs Sangita JIndal. We have recently launched the Earth Care awards for excellence in climate change mitigation and adaptation.
As a part of this initiative, Mr. Sajjan Jindal Vice-Chairman & Managing Director, JSW Group and an environment enthusiast said, "At JSW we are committed to mitigation and adaptation of Global Warming. The Group will take all the relevant steps - small or big, to mitigate the risks by utilizing each and every calorie of heat."
Mrs. Sangita Jindal, says, "We are the trustees of our health and well-being of our future generations. Open spaces are diminishing and the forest are depleting drastically. We hope that this award initiative would propel a climate protection movement that is triggered by the acknowledgement of climate change as a 'noble' peace initiative. What gives me confidence to be able to reach out and hand hold for wider dissemination of local knowledge, is our partnerships with strong institutions such as CEE and TERI combined with media support."
