JSW Steel Limited, Salem Works (formerly known as Southern Iron and Steel Company Ltd.), was acquired by JSW Group in November 2004. Salem Works is the only integrated steel plant in the state of Tamil Nadu and is located at Pottaneri / M. Kalipatti villages about 35 kms from Salem.

As part of the JSW Group, the plant underwent a dramatic transformation and started making profits from the very first year since JSW took over the management of the plant. A fast paced expansion plan was drawn for the company to make it the first 1 MTPA integrated steel plant in Tamil Nadu.

The Company has facilities for production of Pig Iron, Steel, Billet and Rolled Steel products in the long product category. It has adopted the Sinter plant – Blast furnace – Energy Optimising Furnace – Ladle Furnace, Vacuum Degassing Continuous Casting Machine – bar and rod mill route with iron ore as the basic input material. It also has plants for generation of power and production of Coke and Oxygen.

JSW has invested more than Rs.1300 Crore to bring new facilities and to upgrade the capacity of the plant after the acquision. Many plants have been augmented and the capacities have been increased.

The Salem Works has risen like the Phoenix to become one of the largest industry in the state. JSW Salem Works is an ISO certified TS16949 Company, which is enabling the growth of the automobile industry in south India. It also caters to the needs of the construction industry in the south.

Demographic profile

The rainfall here is - 438.9 mm (total rain fall) and 18.28 mm (average rainfall) the soil has red type soil on the top surface with loose rocks forming at the base at 2-3 feet from ground level. The crop is mainly paddy, cereals, pulses, coconut and oil seeds. Salem Works is highly environment conscious and the process and technology is designed for reusing and recycling the process waste. There is an expanding green belt to provide a green environment.

Education:

Education is one of our main focus areas for the children in the area. There are six Government primary schools around the plant. Due to lack of awareness of education, basic amenities and proper infrastructure, it was difficult for the children to go to school and pursue their studies. We at JSW are trying to motivate children and their parents for better education by providing basic amenities. JSW Foundation has given land and constructed a new school building at Pichakaranur. It also has a noon meal center. Another new school building has been constructed for the Government Primary School at Malamanur where the old school building was also renovated recently.

Industrial Training Institute (ITI) at Mettur under Public Private Partnership (PPP) scheme has been adopted. The managing committee has laid down futuristic plans for upgrading educational standards, improved pedagogy, infrastructure etc.

Meritorious engineering students at the Salem Government College of Engineering are awarded the annual OP Jindal Memorial Scholarship.

JSW Steel Limited believes in sharing knowledge and practical expertise with the future engineers. Keeping this in view, JSW Salem Works has signed MoU with Government Engineering College, Salem and Sona College of Technology, Salem. The Company provides technical exposure to students by means of “In Plant Trainings” and “Project Works”.

Health

JSW Foundation provides full support to the State Pulse Polio programme. Volunteers take part in the publicity campaigns to mobilize maximum children to be drawn for the programme. JSW also provides support in logistics, advertisement and catering.

JSW has helped in the upgradation of the operation theatre at Mecheri Primary. JSW Foundation also maintains the health center for better hygiene.

Two overhead water tanks have been installed to provide drinking water for the villagers of Pichakaranur and Malamanur villages.

Sports:

We have constituted an annual OP Jindal Memorial Cricket Tournament in which various engineering colleges in and around Salem district play against each other for the title.

Sports and drawing competitions are organized on the occasions of the Republic Day and the Independence Day in the six government primary schools surrounding the plant.

Environment:

JSW are highly environment conscious and uses latest in-house waste management process technology for reusing and recycling of our wastes. JSW has also developed an expanding green belt to provide a green environment and rainwater harvesting by construction of ponds. To ensure environment protection measures, recycling of all process waste in-house, on line monitoring system of SO2 & SPM, effluent treatment and sewerage treatment plants for reuse/cycling of wastewater have been installed in the factory premise. JSW is in the advance stage of getting the ISO14001: 2004 certification, which is expected soon.

Clean Development Mechanism (CDM)

The process is on for getting Carbon Credit under Clean Development Mechanism for power generation using the waste heat of coke oven flue gases generated from non-recovery type coke oven batteries and excess Blast Furnace Gas generated from Blast Furnaces. The expected annual CO2 reduction would be around 291368 tones.

Art & Culture:

A sum of Rs.10,00,000 has been given to ancient Shri Bhadrakaliamman Temple, Mecheri for its renovation and expansion. This temple is approximately 800 years old and is known for its ancient stone sculptures.

The reconstruction of Sri Madheswaran Temple at Goundanur Village has also been completed.
