| The Jindal Group acquired Piramal Steel Ltd. in 1982 which at that time was operating as a mini steel plant at Tarapur in Maharashtra. The plant moved on to become JSW Steel Ltd. 1990 – 91 saw the merger of a hot rolling mill at Vasind when Jindal Iron & Steel Co Ltd (JISCO) scripted a new chapter in the history of Indian steel industry. In the financial year 1992 - 93 a Coated Strips Division (CSD-I) was commissioned at Tarapur to produce galvanized sheets / coils along with the commissioning of a Cold Rolling Mill (TM-1). 1995 - 96 saw the commissioning of the second Coated Strips Division (CSD-II) at Tarapur Works along with Hot Bridle & Zinc Coating measurement gauges.
A major milestone was achieved during 1996 – 97, when Tarapur became the largest galvanizer in India and received ISO 9002 Certification. A 6 Hi Cold Rolling Mill (TM-4) was commissioned at Tarapur in Feb 1997 followed by the commissioning of a Cold Rolling Mill-2 (TM-2) Tarapur in May the same year.
In 2005_06 a Colour Coating Line-1 was commissioned at Tarapur with a capacity of 1, 00,000 MT / annum. In March 2005 a Cold Rolling Mill-6 (TM-6) was added to the works. The year also witnessed the installation of two semi-automatic CT . In 2008 - 09 the second Colour Coating Line-2 with 1,00,000 MT per annum capacity was commissioned alongside major up-gradation of CSD-3 line, Dual pot arrangement – to produce galvanized as well as Galvalume products.
Work is in progress to acquired land for 30 x 2 MW Power Plant at Tarapur which is scheduled to generate power before the financial year 2009-2010.
Apart from being a leading manufacturer of cold rolled and colour coated steel, Tarapur Works is today India’s biggest producer and largest exporter of galvanized steel. At Tarapur Works, the Company has recently launched GALVALUME, a revolutionary product in the steel industry. Its strategic location on the western line, one of the major industrial line, connecting Mumbai to adjoining industrial areas like Vapi, Ankleshwar, Surat, Baroda Ahmedabad and Mundra port, give the Works an added advantage to access markets, major ports like Mumbai and source raw materials alike.
Demographic profile
Tarapur Plant, 120 km north of Mumbai is located at Boisar village in Palghar Taluka of Thane District of Maharashtra. Tarapur is world renowned for being India’s first Atomic Power & Research station. The Bhaba Atomic Research Centre is also located here.
Tarapur MIDC is also one of the largest industrial areas of Maharashtra with more than 1000 operating units. Palghar Taluka is predominantly a tribal Taluka , inhabited by of Koli, Warali, Thakur, Katkari communities. The villages are scattered into small wadi and wastis; satellite settlements, scattered around the main big settlement. Though the situation has changed drastically over the last few years and has become Peri - Urban areas.
The main occupation of people is still agriculture; but a substantial number of them are employed with major & small and medium scale industries in the area. The agriculture is rain-fed and subsistence oriented. The major crop is rice in the monsoon and vegetables and pulses are grown in small areas where irrigation is available.

Livelihood
INDUSTRIAL TRAINING INSTITUTE – VANGAON and PALGHAR
Vocational training Institutes under the Ministry of Labour and Employment (MoLE) is one of the most comprehensive systems in the country. Under the system, the Craftsmen Training Scheme (CTS) and Apprenticeship Training Scheme (ATS) are two important schemes.
We have adopted two ITI’s from the Thane District – Vangaon and Palghar under the CoE (Center of Excellence) & PPP scheme respectively. The aim is to develop the institution and its management with a focus on training the underprivileged, dropouts, and unemployed youths of nearby vicinity in different vocational trades.
Activities initiated
Efforts were initiated to help ITI in developing the required infrastructure and face make over of the existing infrastructure, this will attract more talents. The ambience make over will create the pleasant and ideal environment for the education.
Education
EARLY CHILD EDUCATION PROJECT
Early Child Education Project under Integrated Child Development Scheme Project (ICDS) has commenced at Tarapur under which the first round of 4 days training is being imparted to Anganwadi sevikas in the month of February and Second 3 days training is organised in the month of August. Wherein 26 Anganwadi Sewikas are trained every year for 4 days, while one full day training is imparted to the supervisors to educate them on the importance of the this training.
CAREER GUIDANCE
Every year between the October & December period Career guidance workshops/exhibitions are organised in schools in and around Boisar. Career guidance exhibition in collaboration with Young Buzz & other organizations are held. Many schools participate every year from in and around Boisar. Till date around 16000 children sought benefit of these workshops and exhibitions. JSW makes it a point to approach principals of the schools around Boisar to encourage those finishing from the 10th and 12th standard for the career guidance workshops.
As part of need assessment many schools are visited for our CALC (Computer Aided Learning Classes) project and the few places are found to be very suitable for our pilot project. Projects are initiated once the program in Marathi is available from Azim Premji foundation
MERIT AWARDS
Merit Awards for the top rankers in 10th and 12th standard is organised every year where in Scholars/ Toppers from the Palghar Taluka is facilitated every year with the medallion and cash prizes. Scholar Girls are especially encouraged with a special category medallion. Top three in boy’s category and top three in the girls category are facilitated along with their parents, teachers and principals to encourage and motivate them to study further.
Health
PRESIDENTIAL AWARD “NIRAMAL GRAM PURASKAR”
JSW always has a sustainability approach and is known for its unique & innovative contribution. One such initiative of JSW Tarapur is recognized with the Presidential Award “Niramal Gram Puraskar” for the developmental work towards total sanitation in Vengani, Kudan and Nihe village.
Involvement of the villagers is important for the success for upcoming projects. A sense of ownership is equally important, as they should feel it as their project rather than accepting it as any government grant. Hence, it was decided that the beneficiaries would carry out the initial labour work of digging and material handling.
Sanitation project: Today, more than 800 low Cost Toilets are constructed by JSW in various villages and are planning to build many more.
Apart from construction of toilets the villagers, were motivated and helped in meeting other requirements like tree plantation, cleaning of village, waste management pits etc to achieve a target for sanitation. This was just a step forward to a long journey of Total Sanitation, and appreciation started pouring in the form of Awards, and a target to reach higher in constructing more toilets in Palghar Taluka was achieved.
The village Panchayats was honored by The President of India – Smt. Prathibha Patil at Pune in Maharastra on 8th December 2008 in a ceremony hosted by Government of India.
HIV/AIDS awareness campaign - So far 95% of the employees and about 30% of the contract employees has been covered.
Every year we organize AIDS awareness rally on 1st December in which employees along with their family members and local citizens participate. Arrangement for the red ribbon, badges for Peer educators, T-shirts with Printed logo of Jindal and JSWF along with AIDS awareness slogan printed leaflets are distributed among citizens and their family members that participate in the program.
Lifeline Express is the world’s first hospital on rails which offer on-the-spot, free of cost, diagnostic, medical and surgical interventions to the disabled.
This project which aims at initiating disability preventive & corrective measures benefit patients related to vision & hearing defects, cleft lip surgeries & orthopedic cases needing surgical treatment.
Lifeline Express started its surgical treatment camp in Palghar Taluka.
JSW Foundation’s work was well appreciated by Impact India Foundation. As their M.D Zelma Luzarus personally conveyed their massage by meeting the CSR representative during her visit to the site. Hon. Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Shri Vilasrao Deshmukh, visited for the closing ceremony of the 92nd project finished at Palghar.
Cancer: JSW worked on organising sessions on Cancer. Initial discussions were carried out with the Bombay Hospital and We-Care, where a voluntary Organisation is exclusively working with cancer patients and their families. Later another NGO called Sangeeta Darvekar Charitable Trust, exclusively working on Oral Cancer volunteered.
Occupational Health Hazards: Sessions on Occupational Health Hazards. Safety committee gives their special presence in these programs. Following the event more sessions are organised for the shop-floor employees.
Environment
ECO-FRIENDLY PLASTIC RECYCLING PROJECT
Plastics arouse passions. The technos say plastics are omnipotent; that man’s future will be fully served by its miracles. The greens say, plastics have no merits whatsoever and must be un-invented. Amidst slogans of “ban plastics” and “use plastics with care", the debate rages on.
WASTE MANAGEMENT
Organic waste Management pits are created in the plant in collaboration with Mukta NGO from Mumbai. These pits have been designed to accommodate 125 kg of organic waste (canteen leftovers dead leaves etc,) per day. The extra manure produced in the pits are utilized in our colonies and also distributed among the needy farmers.
RAIN WATER HARVESTING
Rainwater Management System is installed at the Tarapur Unit. The first phase was completed before the monsoon to see the results and the amount of saving. Technically the Supply of Rainwater in plant, which is 300,000 KL, is more than the Demand of waters that is 250,000 KL, at our campus.
Installation of Bore-wells Taking into consideration the intense water shortage in Boisar many bore-wells were installed in the near by villages/padas.
Clean Boisar & Green Boisar campaign was held where plastic has been banned in and around Boisar Panchayats. Clean Boisar, Banning of Plastic: With a vision to make Boisar/Tarapur MIDC a model MIDC, and mission of making Boisar Clean and Green.
Theme Celebration
In the month of December CSS (Community Social Service) month was observed .A Rally on No-Plastic, was carried out where around 100 employees and contract workers, participated. 1000 leaflets and 500 jute bags were also distributed among localities.
As part of Health month various activities are organised for the employees, which include Eye donation camp, Health awareness through e-mails, Morning exercises, Life Insurance, Sessions on Naturopathy, Health Check up camp, Session on dental care, Blood Donation Camp, Sessions on positive mental health etc.
Tree plantation (Shraam daan) is organised in one Adivasi ashram. Here the motive is not just tree plantation but to encourage the children to be responsible to take care of the trees and fruits around. Many saplings of different varieties are planted.
Sports
A lot of sports activities are conducted for the employees throughout the year.
Friendly football matches are organised every year for the employees on 15th August, where employees participate with a lot of enthusiasm.
A badminton tournament for the employees is also conducted in the month of October –November.
A Volley ball friendship cup is played between Vasind and Tarapur in the month of February every year. A volleyball tournament (Intra-Plant) is also played every year where different departments compete with each other.
An Intra-Plant cricket tournament is organised every year at the TVM ground in Tarapur, in the month of December wherein around 8 to 10 teams from various departments participate.
Carom & Ring throw tournament is organised for the Ladies Club members in the month of March every year at Tarapur. Participation from club members is always overwhelming.
JSW Cup Cricket
The JSW Cup Cricket Tournament is a major annual event at Tarapur. Every year the cricket tournament is getting more exciting following the ICL, IPL and other big cricket events. Every year teams from across JSW locations fight tough battles for the TAJ of JSW CUP.
The main object that the JSW CUP is organized is to promote interaction and friendship at all locations. Every match was full of vibration, comments and an instinct to WIN.
Employee Engagement
JSW Foundation organises plays/skits at Tarapur, especially for the employees and their families where in Artists from Mumbai perform for the JSW Families. Plays and skits are based on different social issues pertaining to the society.
The "Henkel Chembond Children's Center" a local NGO organises Sales cum exhibitions. The articles made by the tribal children. Some of item includes Candle, Flower vase, Mobile Cover, flowers, wall pieces etc. of every day use.
