It is here, in Vasind that a new chapter was written in the history of Indian Steel Industry when JSW made its foray at Vasind in 1982 and setup a 20 Hi CR mill. JSW then acquired a mini steel mill, which moved on to become JSW Steel Ltd.

Apart from being a leading manufacturer of cold rolled steel, Vasind Works is today India’s biggest producer and largest exporter of galvanized steel. Its strategic location, with access to the major ports of Mumbai, markets and raw material sources has worked to its advantage.

As JSW grew phenomenally, it also steered Vasind towards a newer horizon of prosperity. Apart from providing more jobs to people around, JSW actively participates and organizes various social and cultural activities to make lives richer.

Demographic profile

The Vasind Plant is loacted in Vasind village in Shahapur Taluka of Thane district. It is located approximately 70 kms. from Mumbai and 35 kms from its district headquarter. Shahapur Taluka is predominantly a tribal Taluka and has a tribal population of Koli, Warali, Thakur, Katkari. The villages too have scattered into small wadi and wastis; satellite settlements, scattered around the main big settlement. The main occupation of people is agriculture; a small percentage of them are employed with railways and in small scale industries in the Mumbai suburbs. The agriculture is rain-fed and subsistence oriented. The major crop is rice in the monsoon and vegetables and pulses are grown in small areas where irrigation is available.

Education

Jindal Vidya Mandir School

Jindal Vidya Mandir-Vasind was founded in1989 under the aegis of Jindal Education Trust. When it was started it just had three standards, it followed the SSC Syllabus. At present, the school has1200 student on rolls and is affiliated to CBSE-New Delhi. The medium of instruction is in English.

The school has been accredited with ISO 9001:2000 and the IMC Ramakrishna Bajaj National Quality Award.

JVM is an effort towards providing physical, social, traditional atmosphere and Academic Environment close to what is available in Metros. The primary aim is to develop students with qualities of integrity, honesty, trust, tolerance and compassion, thereby promoting awareness to foster a scientific temperament within the bond of humanism, helping students to become a meaningful part of their environment and to see that their courage have due rewards. The pursuit of excellence has encouraged JVM to rest on the positive that every child has in them to produce quality talent.

Besides value addition, moral motivation is also explained during the assembly time in the morning through short anecdotes.

To fill the qualities of patroitism, tradition and relegion, major festivals of our country such as Ganpati Utsav, Dahi-Handi, Gokul Asthmi, Navratra, Deewali, Holi, Eid Christmas, Raksha Bandhan etc. are celebrated

Here at JVM, the children perform to the best in their student life as well as the life after moulding them to be a unique personality. Today JVM, has become a Beacon of Light, which is illuminating in the field of Education in this entire area.

JVM endeavors to provide highly dedicated and qualified faculty with a wide range of skills and interest, a varied and wide choice of academic activities aesthetic and athletic environment, enriched with excitement of discovery, challenge, competitiveness and discipline based on the belief that responsibility comes before freedom.

Keeping pace with changing scenario and demand of time the school switched over to C.B.S.E. curriculum in 2004. Since then the school is growing every year. The first batch of CBSE appeared for their AISSE Examination in March 2008 and the result was 98.14%.

Career Guidance programs

As part of CSR activities Vasind location is pursuing career guidance project with a passion to reach out to rural students studying in the 10, 11th and 12th standards

Computer Aided Learning Centre

At Vasind two CALC centers are established; one in Sarswati Vidyalay, Vasind, where 10 computers are donated, and one in Sant Gadge Maharaj Adiwasi Ashram Shala where 6 computers are donated. There are also two CALC centers, one in the Government Residential School for tribal children at Pendharghol village; and the other one a Primary school at Sane village.

Hostel for tribal residential school

With an objective to contribute to the cause of education of tribal children, JSW Steel has decided to allow Sant Gadge Maharaj Mission to use 8 flats in Vrindawan Housing Complex, Vasind; as a hostel for tribal students seeking education in the Residential School for tribal children located in Bhatsai village at a nominal charge of Rs.1/- per annum. This school started way back in 1970 and has more than 400 students studying in various classes from 1st standard to SSC

Health

Jindal Hospital

In the year 1998 a hospital unit was established at Vasind for the JSW employees. Before that there was an out patient department for providing only the primary treatment to the employee - patients. In 1998 a spacious building for Hospital unit was built up with Major OT , Labor room cum minor OT sections, and was equipped with laboratory . The Indoor Facility includes well-ventilated male and female wards, consisting of 5 female and 5 male beds and also locker facility. Hospital has two ambulances; it offers services to employees, their family members and attends to accident cases. Qualified hospital staff are provided - two plant physicians, two qualified nurses, two compounders, one male and two female helpers, and also part time laboratory technician with an assistant.

Mahuli Health Project

Mahuli is a predominantly tribal area located some 15 Km away from the Vasind factory at the foothills of Mahuli Fort. A team of doctors and paramedics visit Mahuli area every week to offer free diagnostic help and medicines to the tribal population, especially women and children. On an average 50-60 patients are treated on each visit. In needy cases patients are also given vitamin and mineral supplements. If expert advice is required the patients are referred to a Government Hospital nearby. This project is being implemented since the year 2003.

Health project in association with Rotary Club of Goregaon

Health camps in Tribal Residential schools

From 30th Jan 2005 onwards, every year, once or twice the Rotary Club of Goregaon and JSW Steel Ltd. jointly organize Health Camps in residential schools for tribal children that are located around Vasind plant. The children are treated especially for skin diseases involving the Rotary Club of Goregaon

Upgrading Primary Health Centre

Primary Health Centre is a government facility catering to the poorest of poor for whom PHC provides necessary preventive and curative health. The Vasind PHC caters to over 55,000 populations. The Vasind plant has undertaken up gradation of the facility to fulfil its responsibility and respond to the Millennium Development Goals. The key initiative is providing water supply and sanitation facilities.
Awareness sessions related to HIV-AIDS, Safety, self-awareness, communication skills, goal setting are also periodically organized.

Livelihood

SHRAMSADHANA VOCATIONAL TRAINING CENTRE

JSW Steel’s mission regarding Corporate Social Responsibility is very clear. Our mentor Shri Sajjan Jindal, elucidates it very aptly when he says;

“The industry should embrace the philosophy of CSR as a discipline and partner with Government in resolving the problems of underprivileged in the society. The thrust should shift from charity to creation of enterprising self reliant society which can sustain itself independently.”

Shramsadhana Vocational Training Center is a small beginning in this direction.

The Chairperson of Jindal South West Foundation, Mrs. Sangita Jindal, formally inaugurated Shramsadhana Vocational Training Center on 28th March 2003.

The activities of the Centre had informally started from January 2003.

SVTC initially started 5 certificate courses and many short-term courses. These courses were highly subsidized. The students are expected to pay nominal fees, just to ensure that they value their education.

Tie up with ITI

SVTC has tied up with Directorate of Technical Education, whereby the students of SVTC can appear for examination conducted by Industrial Training Institute and get a certification under Loksewa Kendra, which has Government recognition. Two batches appear for the ITI conducted examination and receive the course completion certificate.

Short duration hobby courses

Through SVTC a number of hobby classes such as Fabric painting, Flower Making, Golden painting, Nib Painting, Cone Painting, Zardosi work, Glass painting, Solawood Work, Rimzim and Emboss painting, Cold ceramics, Mehendi application, Bakery are run, in which women and adolescent girls are taught craft.

Partnership with Fr. Agnel Technical College
From September 2004 SVTC started offering its courses in partnership with Fr. Agnel Technical College to ensure that technical inputs are given in the most professional manner.

Fr. Agnel Technical College, since 1961, is a respected name in the field of technical education offering technical education. From 1985 onwards as part of Central Government Scheme Fr. Agnel Community Polytechnic was started with the objective of transfer of technology to rural folk for bringing about socio-economic development. SVTC has partnered with Fr. Agnel Polytechnic to reach out to school dropouts, rural artisans, women and village youth to impart the technical skills, which would equip them for self-employment.

Chairperson, JSW Foundation on 17 Sept. 2006, awarded the course completion certificates to the students who completed their courses. She also stressed the need to organize exposure visits and a number of other activities such as Jardozi work, gas welding, and motor rewinding for students, which will give them an additional edge.

1. Candle making – 4 Day duration
2. Lantern making – One Day duration
3. Creative Greeting cards – One day duration
4. Cold Ceramics Decorative items – Three days
5. Decorative pieces using beads, sequence etc.: - One week duration
6. Jardozi, bead and ari-work – One month duration

Sports

SQUASH

Jindal Squash Academy is the second biggest squash academy in the country and the hub of Squash in Maharashtra. This academy has been set up to promote excellence in squash and provide exposure to rural youth in an around.

TABLE TENNIS

The Jindal Table Tennis Academy (JTTA) is one of the fast growing Academies in Thane district. JTTA has 5 Table Tennis tables which consist of 52 table tennis players. The Junior Table Tennis development program is running with various schools of Vasind and the nearby villages.

KARATE

Karate classes are taken in the evening for the school going children. Many children have qualified in the karate examination which are held periodically and have reached the level of blue, yellow brown and black belt. The JSW team has won the gold medal in the five major categories in the state of Maharashtra.

SKATING

Skating classes has been recently started for the school going children. Nearly 50 students are being trained under special coaching classes.

SUMMER CAMP

This is the most awaited camp during the scotching summer season. Almost 300 children join the camp and participate in the various sport activities like squash, table tennis, swimming, lawn tennis, yoga, karate, skating, rope climbing, fun games, first-aid training, nutrition and diet etc. The camp is run by specialized coaches and experienced hands.
